The different techniques

Hair transplantation or hair implant can be done on hair, beard and eyebrows. This procedure is used to treat alopecia, whatever its form (baldness, alopecia areata, or scarring alopecia).

Several methods can be applied to repair alopecia:

  • ThereWAS or Follicular Unit Transplantation or strip technique: the surgeon cuts a rectangle of skin from the back of the skull, at the donor area. On this strip of skin there are a large number of perfectly healthy hair follicles which will then be isolated, then re-implanted one by one on the bald areas or areas lacking hair density. It has long been considered the reference technique in the field of hair surgery. Even if it has evolved a lot, it is today supplanted by the FUE technique which is scarless.

.

  • Hair transplantation byIFA or Automated Follicular Implantation, carried out by a pre-programmed robot: it is based on ARTAS robots which automatically select and collect the grafts from the donor area more quickly before being transplanted to the recipient area. Although this technology is easily used on the side of the skull or on the occiput, the most common donor area, it does not allow grafts to be taken from elsewhere, notably the neck, face or torso, whereas extraction manual can be carried out anywhere, particularly in the case of complete alopecia of the patient where it will be necessary to seek the grafts elsewhere than on the skull. Robotic extraction is not suitable for very fine or frizzy hair. Also, IFA is more suitable for beginning and moderate baldness in men and partial or diffuse alopecia in women.  The vast majority of clinics using these systems use robots to extract the follicles and then re-implant them manually using the technique FUE.

  • ThereFUE or Follicular Unit Extraction is certainly the most revolutionary of all grafting techniques. This is what is offered at ClinicHair Greffe.
